When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a small hospital near
Tampa, Florida, it was believed that he had nothing left of any value.

Later, when the nurses were going through his meager possessions,
they found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed the staff that
copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital.

One nurse took her copy to Missouri the old man's sole bequest to
posterity has since appeared in the Christmas edition of the News
Magazine of the St. Louis Association for Mental Health. A slide
presentation has also been made based on his simple, but eloquent, poem.

And this little old man, with nothing left to give to the world, is
now the author of this “anonymous" poem winging across the Internet.

       Crabby Old Man

What do you see nurses? ...What do you see?
What are you thinking.....when you're looking at me?
A crabby old man ...not very wise,
Uncertain of habit ......with faraway eyes?

Who dribbles his food.......and makes no reply.
When you say in a loud voice...."I do wish you'd try!"
Who seems not to notice .the things that you do.
And forever is losing.......... A sock or shoe?

Who, resisting or not...........lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding ... The long day to fill?
Is that what you're thinking? Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse......you're not looking at me.

I'll tell you who I am........ As I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding ...As I eat at your will.
I'm a small child of Ten.......with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters ........who love one another

A young boy of Sixteen with wings on his feet
Dreaming that soon now. .......a lover he'll meet.
A groom soon at twenty ......my heart gives a leap.
Remembering, the vows.....that I promised to keep.

At Twenty-Five, now......... I have young of my own.
Who need me to guide.... And a secure happy home.
A man of thirty........ My young now grown fast,
Bound to each other....... With ties that should last.

At forty, my young sons...have grown and are gone,
       But my woman's beside me.......to see I don't mourn.
At fifty, once more, Babies play 'round my knee,
Again, we know children..... My loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me.............. My wife is now dead.
I look at the future ...............I shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing.....young of their own.
And I think of the years....... And the love that I've known.

I'm now an old man.........and nature is cruel.
Tis jest to make old age ......look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles..........grace and vigor, depart.
There is now a stone........where I once had a heart.

But inside this old carcass...... A young guy still dwells,
And now and again .......my battered heart swells
I remember the joys........... I remember the pain.
And I'm loving and living.............life over again.

I think of the years...all too few......gone too fast.
And accept the stark fact........that nothing can last.
So open your eyes, people ..........open and see..
Not a crabby old man. Look closer....see........ME!!

Remember this poem when you next meet an older person who you might
brush aside without looking at the young soul within.....we will all, one
day, be there, too!

On my visit through Space Land last week I came across an entry by one of my blog friends that I found very interesting. She shared the fact that she had met one of her blog friends face to face. This is something I always fantasize about...finally meeting the people I have communicated with for two years now. I feel that I know you! Do any of you ever think about this and would you ever actually set up a face to face meeting with someone here in Spaces? I hope you will share your feelings and your experiences with us this week.

Please don't forget to stop by Ron's space if you haven't checked out his Little Book of Man Project! His list of participants is still growing!

A water bearer in China had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water to his house.

Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.

After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house."

The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, and I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you've watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house."

Moral:

Each of us has our own unique flaws. We're all cracked pots. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding.

You've just got to take each person for what they are, and look for the good in them........

Turn on my Media Player if you want to hear Bubba talk about how many ways you can prepare shrimp (Forrest Gump).

Only a Southerner knows how many fish, collard greens, turnip greens,

peas, beans, etc., make up "a mess."

_____

Only a Southerner can show or point out to you the general direction

of "yonder."

_____

Only a Southerner knows exactly how! long "directly" is -- as in:

"Going to town, be back directly."

_____

Even Southern babies know that "Gimme some sugar" is not a request for

the white, granular sweet substance that sits in a pretty little bowl

in the middle of the table.

_____

All Southerners know exactly when "by and by" is. They might not use

the term, but they know the concept well.

_____

They also know that "just down the road" can be 1 mile or 20.

_____

No true Southerner would ever assume that the car with the flashing

turn signal is actually going to make a turn.

_____

A Southerner knows that "fixin" can be used as a noun, a verb, or an adverb.

_____

Only Southerners make friends while standing in lines. We don't do

"queues," we do "lines"; and when we're "in line," we talk to

everybody!

_____

Put 100 Southerners in a room and half of them will discover they're

related, even if only by marriage.

_____

Southerners never refer to one person as "ya'll."

_____

Southerners know grits come from corn and how to eat them.

_____

Every Southerner knows tomatoes with eggs, bacon, grits, and coffee

are perfectly wonderful; that red eye gravy is also a breakfast food;

and that fried green tomatoes are not a breakfast food.

_____

When you hear someone say, "Well, I caught myself lookin'," you know

you are in the presence of a genuine Southerner

_____

Only true Southerners say "sweet tea" and "sweet milk." Sweet tea

indicates the need for sugar and lots of it -- we do not like our tea

unsweetened. "Sweet milk" means you don't want buttermilk.

_____

And a true Southerner knows you don't scream obscenities at little old

ladies who drive 30 MPH on the freeway. You just say, "Bless her

heart" and go your own way.

_____

To those of you who're still a little embarrassed by your Southerness:

Take two tent revivals and a dose of sausage gravy and call me in the

morning. Bless your heart!

_____

And to those of you who are still having a hard time understanding all

this Southern stuff, bless your hearts, I hear they are fixin' to have

classes on Southernness as a second language!

_____

And for those that are not from the South but have lived here for a

long time, ya'll need a sign to hang on ya'lls front porch that reads

"I ain't from the South but I got here as fast as I could."

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-09-12T16:21:49Z</dcterms:modified>

Goodbye, Adios, Adieu

Well, today is going to be a sad day for me and for 6 people that I have grown quite fond of over these past few years. Today is their last day of work here. They are moving on to another location to continue their careers. As for me, I have another month here. It will be a l-o-n-g month for me because I will miss them so, but we will continue to keep in touch through email.

It is rare that you have an after-work relationship with the people you work with. We just enjoyed each other's company and tried to hang out after work as much as we could. It was harder for me because I lived further away. I made an effort last night because I knew it would be our last time together. We really had a good time. Two of the guys DJed at the club we went to which really made it special. There were no tears, just a genuine good time. My oldest son hung out with us as well which really made it special for me.

The majority of the people in the group were quite a bit younger than me so I will be praying for their continued success in their careers and for their safety because a lot of them travel quite extensively. They did look at me as a mother figure which was always flattering to me. My days were always filled with a lot of laughs and an occasional hug and kiss on the cheek which always made my day. I can only pray that my next assignment will be as great as this one was. My strongest prayer is that our paths will cross again one day.

Please pray for my friend Joyce today. Her husband is having heart bypass surgery this morning in Alabama.

Have a wonderful Thursday!
